in English from Hollins College in Virginia. While Brown’s legacy of “the quiet old lady whispering ‘hush’” might have created a public image of her as docile and domestic, her life was anything but predictable.īorn in 1910 in Brooklyn, New York, Brown was the middle of three children and attended several schools as a child before getting her B.A. But beyond her books, she was also an international traveler and volatile romantic who wrote for children in a way that was revolutionary for her time. Margaret Wise Brown, noted children’s book author and educator, is best known for writing the nursery classic Goodnight Moon, as well as a host of other children’s books that pair Brown’s gentle text with soothing illustrations.

Mariana lives in a small town called Pagosa Springs, Colorado with her husband/best friend, Chris Letchford, and their two well-beloved (and emotionally manipulative) Great Dane children, Dorian and Kaiser. Her novels tend to include potty humor, bodily functions, and bad words. Eventually, her significant other finally told her to do what she wanted to do and she began working on her original work. In her teens, she wrote boy band fanfiction (there’s still a website up somewhere on the internet with those masterpieces), and in her early twenties, she picked it back up again with Sookie Stackhouse and Twilight. Luckily, she stuck to stories about princesses and princes for a while. She probably shouldn’t admit that she started sneaking romance novels from her aunt’s bookshelves way before she was old enough to even understand what it meant when a man flipped up a woman’s skirt… don’t tell her mom. Mariana Zapata began writing love stories soon after she learned how to spell. There is Slim, who is the best character in the story, an awesome tomboy, pretty, super smart, well read with lots of practical street saavy as well. Even though for the most part Dwight was an ok kid, I never did develop much liking for his character. And some of his fantasies are somewhat disturbing and didn't strike me as normal, veering off into strange bondage murder porn. Dwight spends pretty much every waking moment having sexual thoughts and fantasies about both females. There is Dwight, who is obsessive about sex, his bestie, teen tomboy Slim, AND his pretty sister in law Lee. The traveling vampire show is a traveling side show that turns out to be a showcase for Valeria in a sort of wrestling cage match forum. It is more, a really seamy coming of age novel about 3 small town teens who develop a fascination and obsession with the Traveling Vampire show and its entourage which includes the mysterious vampire Valeria. This is not really a horror novel, it does have some suspense, mildly scary scenes with a few gory descriptions. Which itself could be a compliment to the vivid richness of Layton's writing. For me this was almost a DNF a couple of times due to intense dislike of certain characters. I am trying to find a way to rate this book with out coming off as a complete prude. However, I knew nothing about the amazing story of the Danish Jews and their escape from the Nazis due to their fellow Danes smuggling them across to Sweden. I’ve always considered myself pretty cognizant of World War II, and a majority of historical fiction I’ve read and enjoyed have taken place in that time period. Rating: 4/5 Number the Stars is yet another historical fiction book that told me a story I didn’t know. Somehow she must find the strength and courage to save her best friend’s life. Then Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission. The Jews of Denmark are being “relocated,” so Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be part of the family. But it’s now 1943, and their life in Copenhagen is filled with school, food shortages, and Nazi soldiers marching in their town. Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend, Ellen Rosen, often think about the way life was before the war. Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry, was published in 1989 by Houghton. I do wish that some of the final climax chapters with the enemy Queen were elongated as it did feel like it was wrapped up pretty neatly – even though I could tell that the plot was leading in that direction. I did predict pretty much everything that happened so there weren’t really any twists for me, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment at all. I really enjoyed the addition of a few new characters (side note: I need a Misha spin-off □) and I felt that all the characters had the arc they deserved. I found the beginning a little slow and I struggled to get back into the world after the initial action-packed chapters. I found These Twisted Bonds to be just as addictive a read as These Hollow Vows! I liked that Brie came into herself and her powers more, the romance was swoony even though the spice was mild and the plot was interesting. |
