You can find the short story in the collection, Everything’s Eventual. I’m glad I watched it for this article-it made the cut. This is really a one-man show, Cusack being the only actor leading the entire movie, and he does a great job. Toward the end, it straightens itself out again, tapering off into realistic horrors like those in the beginning. About an hour into it, everything begins to derail, and the horrific events become a little repetitive, to the point of being almost ridiculous. Jackson does an excellent job as the hotel’s manager trying to convince Mike not to stay the night.Īs in most horror movies, the setup and initial scares are the most unsettling. Room 1408 at The Dolphin Hotel proves to be everything it’s rumored to be. Regardless, I loved it! Cusack plays Mike Enslin, a skeptical paranormal expert who writes books about his experiences staying overnight in popular haunted hotels and buildings. Jackson in a Stephen King adaptation? How did I miss this when it first came out? The likely answer is that the trailer scared me and I was too chicken to watch it. I just watched this movie for the first time.

Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible"-Publisher's website Based on years of embedded fieldwork and painstakingly gathered data, this masterful book transforms our understanding of extreme poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving a devastating, uniquely American problem. As we see families forced into shelters, squalid apartments, or more dangerous neighborhoods, we bear witness to the human cost of America's vast inequality-and to people's determination and intelligence in the face of hardship. In vivid, intimate prose, Desmond provides a ground-level view of one of the most urgent issues facing America today. But today, most poor renting families are spending more than half of their income on housing, and eviction has become ordinary, especially for single mothers. "Even in the most desolate areas of American cities, evictions used to be rare. When the three stories crash together in a startling climax, it leaves the planet (and listeners) reeling. The Fifth Season follows the twisting threads of three different stories, as three powerful female Orogenes-including a mother on a desperate search for her missing daughter-fight to survive. When one incredibly powerful Orogene, frustrated with the rigid and oppressive society, splits the entire continent along its length, Stillness is threatened by its worst Season yet. Not surprisingly, they’re widely feared and often killed for their powers. Taken from their homes as children and subjected to brutal training, Orogenes have the magical ability to quell earthquakes and stave off climate upheavals, known as Seasons-as well as flash-freeze ordinary humans. And with a Fifth Season of ferocious climate change fast approaching, being an Orogenes is more dangerous than ever. On the planet’s lone continent, Stillness, the gifted Orogenes choose how to wield their power over the Earth-for good or ill. After all, Phoebe was not the kind of woman men fell in love with-Phoebe with her untidy hair, her rumpled clothes, and her fingers forever ink-stained from the poetry she wrote. It would be nothing short of torture to be married to Granville, knowing he didn't love her and never would. Once she'd noticed, she couldn't seem to stop noticing, and suddenly Phoebe was disastrously in love. except that one day Phoebe looked at Granville-really looked at him-and saw what she'd never seen before: he was darkly, breathtakingly attractive. Her forced engagement to him should have been quite a cold-blooded arrangement. But then her sister died, and Phoebe seemed a reasonable substitute. The Accidental Bride could only be the story of Phoebe, the "awkward" one. The second novel in the captivating Brides Trilogy, in which three unconventional young women vow they will never marry-only to be overtaken by destiny. Through the writings of such works as Anti-Dühring, Ludwig Feuerbach and the End of Classical German Philosophy, Dialectics of Nature, and Origins of the Family, Private Property and the State, Engels secured the triumph of Marxism as the theoretical and political foundation of the world socialist movement. Engels’ intense intellectual and political collaboration with Marx, which continued throughout the latter’s 35-year exile and until his death in 1883, embraced the founding of the First International and Marx’s writing of Capital, which Engels ultimately completed after Marx’s death. The Manifesto, commissioned as a program for the Communist League, established the programmatic foundations of the modern socialist movement. In 1848, Engels assisted Marx in his writing of the Communist Manifesto. Between 18, Marx and Engels collaborated closely in the refutation of the idealist philosophy of the Young Hegelians, including in the publication of The German Ideology, which contained the first ever elaboration of the materialist conception of history. Friedrich Engels was the lifelong collaborator of Karl Marx, and played, after Marx himself, the leading role in the development of Marxism as a science and a revolutionary program for the working class in the 19th century.Įngels’ early work on political economy and his study of the conditions of the working class in England exerted an immense impression on the young Marx and directed the latter toward his study of political economy.
